Multiplication is equal groups

Times means groups of. It is addition, organized.

Why this exists

Adding 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 works. It is also slow, and it’s easy to lose count of how many sixes you wrote down.

Multiplication is a shorter sentence for “this many equal groups.” It doesn’t invent a new kind of combining. It refuses to write the same addition over and over.
